What is the remembrance of the dead by name?

The remembrance of the dead by name (in Polish, wypominki) is one of the oldest Polish traditions of prayer for the dead: the priest reads out the names of the deceased, and the faithful gathered together say a prayer for them. From the very beginning the Church prayed for the dead by name – names were written on the so-called diptychs and read out during the liturgy.

In Poland there are several forms of this custom:

• once only – the names are read out once, usually on 1 or 2 November,
• during the octave – in the octave of All Saints, from 1 to 8 November,
• annual – throughout the year, for example every Sunday or once a month.

The annual remembrance in Białynicze

We read out the names of the deceased that you send us before Sunday Mass throughout the liturgical year, followed by a prayer for the dead.

How to write the names

• Give the first names and surnames of the deceased, for example “John Smith, Mary Smith”.
• You may add a short description: “late parents John and Mary”, “the departed of the Brown family”, “the souls in purgatory”.
• There is no need to give dates of death.
